Well I have not done much painting of late. I would like to say it is due to the fact that summer has arrived and I am out and about but unfortunately summer seems to be rather elusive again this year!
However a few months back I was approached by the MG Owners Club of Northern Ireland. Every year they hold a Quiz Night and Charity Auction at which time money is raised for a Charity chosen by the current Chairman. Over the years they have raised over 50 thousand pounds on this particular event which is supported by many different car clubs throughout the province.
I was asked if I would put myself up for auction, as in offer to paint someone’s treasured car. I had never painted a car before but I was up for the challenge. How hard could it be?… turns out very!
On this particular night the MG Owners Club raised approx. £2200 for the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. My offer of putting up a painting for auction raised £220.
The painting was to be in acrylics on a 16’ x20’ canvas. I received 3 photographs of the car. It was a white Jaguar XK 120.
As most of my paintings are done on a white background I was really worried about how I would go about painting white on white. I could have used another colour or painted in a background scene but I felt both would detract from the car itself.
This has probably been one of the hardest things I’ve attempted, getting the proportions right and the angle proved very tricky. I am pleased with the finished painting; I only hope that the owner will be too.
